Beyond Boundaries: A Concert to Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day: New Date: Monday May 1st at 7pm.

On Monday, May 1st at 7 PM, the Aryaloka String Quartet, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. day (on which the event was origianlly scheduled), will perform works by four composers of color: Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Florence Price, Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson and Jessie Montgomery. In his day, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was compared to Mahler. He was an English, late 19th/early 20th century composer and conductor. The other composers are American. Montgomery, born in 1981, is very much in demand as a composer and performer today.

In the four works we will perform, you will hear an incredible diversity of styles and genres, often in the same piece, each composer borrowing from the traditions not only of classical music, but of jazz, spirituals, folk music and more.

Doors at 6:30. Light refreshments will be available. Proceeds will be donated to the Black Heritage Trail NH.

The Aryaloka String Quartet of Boston was formed in the mid-2000's by long-time colleagues and friends Beth Welty and Mark Latham, violins; Noralee Walker, viola, and Sandi-Jo Malmon, cello. They are dedicated to bringing the communal experience of chamber music to the wider world, in both smaller, unexpected venues as well as traditional concert halls. Their name comes from the Sanskrit word that means "in the abode of the noble ones." They are honored to dwell in this virtual space - transmitting the works of great composers to their audiences. They especially enjoy crafting programs of classic string quartet literature while championing lesser-known, neglected, or forgotten composers.
