Our Current Series:
The Heart’s Awakening — Making Buddhism’s heart-based practices really work for us
Bodhipaksa delights in making Buddhist teachings more accessible, and his new book, “The Heart’s Awakening,” aims to do that for the four practices known as the Brahma Viharas.
He takes a fresh look at this entire series of practices, sometimes reframing them in unexpected ways. For example, the term Brahma Vihara itself can be translated not only as “Divine Abidings” but also as “the best ways of living our lives,” emphasizing that they’re practices for daily life, and not just things we do on the cushion.
Over the course of four weeks Bodhipaksa will explain:
- What the missing link is in many people’s practice of metta bhavana and the other Brahma Viharas
- Why he thinks we should talk about “kindness" rather than lovingkindness
- How self-compassion is an essential support for having compassion for others (and why neither self-compassion nor compassion for others need to be dour experiences)
- Why mudita is “appreciation” rather than “empathetic (or sympathetic) joy,” and
- How the practice of upekkha goes beyond equanimity and how it has the role of bringing us back to kindness, compassion, and appreciation when our capacity to love has failed us.
In short, we’ll explore how to awaken the heart’s potential for love and see how these beautiful practices can lead us toward awakening itself.
